Jerome Karabel joined the University of California, Berkeley Sociology Department in 1984. His primary field of research is in the social consequences and politics of university admissions. In 1989 Professor Karabel was the chair of the Admissions and Enrollment Committee at UCB, which produced a report entitled "Freshman Admissions at Berkeley: A Policy for the 1990's and Beyond." In 1996 he helped coordinate the opposition to Proposition 209, known as the California Civil Rights Initiative, which amended the California State Constitution to prohibit public institutions from discriminating on the basis of race, sex or ethnicity. The initiative passed.
